DIY: Leaf brooches

This DIY came about while I was stuck inside hiding from the rain.  I love a quick project and now I’m layering up pins and brooches make perfect accessories.  What’s lovely about the leaf design is that you can adjust the shape and colours in any way you fancy – golden browns, dark rich greens, or fiery oranges… love those autumn colours!  I don’t think I’ll ever grow bored of metallics so I used golden thread to add a little eye-catching sparkle.

To make your own leafy brooches you just need felt, thread, needle and scissors, and a brooch back.  I cut my leaf shapes freehand but you could make a template using paper – or even real leaves if you want to draw you inspiration even more from the great outdoors.

Either layer up a few leaves on top of each other using single layers of felt, or cut out two matching leaf shapes and connect them together around the edge with blanket stitch (or similar).  I sewed my brooch back in place but you could also glue it (definitely do this if you’re not backing your brooch otherwise you’ll see the joining stitches on the front).

I think I might make a few more of these with greys and silver thread as we move into frosty winter…

Happy Crafting!
